Do programmers with jobs, who have been doing this for a long time still get that panicky feeling when they look at an assignment and it may as well be written in Greek? Like, I went through code school, I built a lot of stuff, but I still generally feel like I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing. It’s very disheartening. I know that I’ve been doing this for less than a year, but, I don’t know, I expected to feel slightly less lost all the time by now. What do you folks do to get rid of this feeling?
- What did you learn yesterday?
- What are you going to do today?
- What do you expect to learn?
Yesterday I rewrote the Coin Changer and the Roman Numeral katas, then I spent most of the rest of the day working on Treehouse tutorials. I went through a bunch of the Ruby ones, and learned stuff about Arrays and Hashes that I didn’t know!
Today I’m going to start working on the new challenges for this quarter — the Gilded Rose kata and a refactoring challenge. I haven’t done a lot of refactoring, so I think it’ll be a learning experience.
I expect to learn that I don’t know anything about refactoring right now. 🙂
